Own Your Life How Our Wounds Become Our Gifts Lise Porter 9780692861851 Books

For everyone who’s ever wanted their life to be different but feels like they’re stuck in gear, Own Your Life explores how we can leverage adversity and move from crisis, challenge, or loss to a place of thriving in our lives.
There is no easy way out of pain yet we often think something is wrong if we find ourselves revisiting the same old stories with no new ending. We’re told that if we just think happy thoughts, all will be well, and then feel like failures when it isn’t. How then do we transform our narratives and embrace our strengths and weaknesses?
In Own Your Life, Lise Porter, a licensed psychotherapist and survivor of her mother’s suicide, passionately asserts that when we fully own the ups and downs of our lives, our personal wounds actually become gifts that serve us and the world at large. Through thirty-five short narratives all dealing with specific themes and tools pertaining to transformation, Porter debunks stigmas associated with grief, loss, and trauma and shares insights that inform, inspire, and soothe- providing readers hope and teaching them how to metabolize adversity so they can tolerate, integrate, and transcend those experiences.
"I highly recommend 'Own Your Life' to all those who despair, struggling to overcome life's challenges. It is beautiful in its simplicity, profound in its wisdom." Mary D. Clark, Ph.D, Psychologist
"This is an ever useful book for all of us who live, grieve, love, cry and want to keep expressing our best." Michael Spatuzzi, DACM, L.Ac.
"Using her own tragic story to outline how we can recover from life's unbearable blows, Lise Porter models the tremendous courage it takes to do so, planting seeds of hope and meaning along the way. A must-read for anyone going through a rough time, 'Own Your Life' is a brave and captivating guidebook." Blair Glaser, MA, LCAT psychotherapist

This book encourages me to think about my own experiences, pain, and opportunities for growth. The author's knowledge as a therapist provided wisdom and expertise, but the book is written in language that is easy to understand. The chapters are super short and take just a few minutes to read yet provide food for thought. As a matter of fact this book is great for a brief daily reading.Even though Ms. Porter touches on some heavy topics, the book doesn't have a preachy or negative tone. Instead she provides honest examples of how to live gracefully amidst the struggles we face at different stages of life. I highly recommend it!

Own Your Life How Our Wounds Become Our Gifts Lise Porter 9780692861851 Books Reviews
Love this book. Very insightful and a lot of wisdom nuggets to help one relate to each individual's story. The raw honesty in which the way the author tells her story is refreshing, grounded, and inspirational. I found myself making a list of friends and family that I feel may benefit from reading this book.
I loved this book! As someone who has had her share of wounds, I found Ms. Porter's wise words comforting, enlightening, and very healing. She shares her own personal stories, opening her self up emotionally, which makes the reader trust the wisdom what she has written within the pages. I love that the chapters are short, making it an easy read! Great job!
Every chapter is one of wisdom and hope. Ms. Porter brings her personal and professional experience to her mission to help others who have experienced difficulties of all types. It's not a self-help book; it's a book written to give the reader another way to think about the ups and downs of life. I read a few chapters each night. I found the work comforting and encouraging.
"Own Your Life" is a tenderly written book which explores the subtle relationship between pain and grace; and how a foot in each may provide the foundation for a happier life. I thoroughly enjoyed the comfortable way in which the author moves between her own painful experiences to the spiritual wisdom her stories offer. Reading this book is like sitting with your grandmother when she tells about something that happened in her life, and then shares the hidden meaning that applies to your struggles.
This is a great book! It gave me so much clarity and a new perspective on my own struggles. The sequence that Ms. Porter uses to tell her story and explain how trauma can become a positive thing is easy to follow and full of common sense. She uses her personal story in a way that I can learn from it while not feeling so alone in my own pain. Yes, a few “ouches” in the process, but the rationale sits so 'right' with me. Many puzzle pieces of my own personal life came together even as I was reading, and by the end of the book I felt a patience and gentleness with myself that I’ve never before experienced. A weight has lifted and I feel empowered. I recommend this book for anyone who is dogged by recurring shame, emotional pain, or self-sabotage.
This book really surprised me. It was really amazing to read the perspective of someone who has experienced and overcome many of the same issues that I've dealt with over the years. She never talks down to the reader but by exposing her own frailties and growth, she gives the audience the permission work through the issues that try to own us. The hurt, disappointment and depression that can stem from tragedy, loss or our own failings do not have to be an unsightly mark on our lives, but something that can be made beautiful. An easy read with short chapters, easy language and simple but profound ideas.
I certainly don't know Lise' intentions on what type of book this is considered, I personally don't consider it a self help book, I consider it a "self permission" book. It's ok to give yourself permission to live and enjoy life, even with all our faults and burdens. Two of my favorite passages from the book that caused a great deal of thought are "In life, opportunities cross our path and we have to decide to take them or let them pass... How do we know when to dance and when to sit out?". I also really enjoyed "What helps is remembering we get to be the authors of our lives. We get to create the story's end... We get to decide where our plot is headed." Even with all of our flaws, wounds, issues and anything else holding us back we CAN give ourselves permission to go beyond the things we think hold us back. I highly encourage you to read her book and allow wounds to become gifts in your life.
